Breaking: Spokane County Court rules in favor of Gonzaga’s Tyon Grant-Foster: ‘The weight is off me’

After a near three-hour meeting at the Spokane County Courthouse on Monday, Judge Marla Polin granted Gonzaga forward Tyon Grant-Foster an injunction, allowing him to play for Gonzaga this season, the Spokesman Review’s Theo Lawson first reported. Grant-Foster was recently denied eligibility by the NCAA, but quickly countered with a lawsuit, arguing for one more year of eligibility.

“I’ve been dealing with so much uncertainty,” he told reporters. “I could practice, but I knew it could end tomorrow. Now that weight is off me, I can go to sleep now.”

He has spent time at Kansas, DePaul and Grand Canyon. becoming a breakout player for GCU over the last two seasons. Grant-Foster has played just three full seasons at the collegiate level, appearing in just one game for DePaul during the 2021-22 season, in which he collapsed at halftime and was hospitalized with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, forcing him to miss about 16 months of play. Grant-Foster was told he may never play basketball again, but he was cleared to play in 2023 and transferred to Grand Canyon.

Grant-Foster’s attorneys cited many cases across the country where the NCAA granted athletes additional eligibility for other circumstances and argued that Grant-Foster’s should also be reviewed:

With the ruling, Grant-Foster was immediately eligible to compete for Gonzaga. He had 4 points, 3 rebounds and an assist in nine minutes of Gonzaga’s 111-53 win over Western Oregon on Monday.

“The reaction in the locker room (when Grant-Foster arrived) was priceless. It’s something I’ll never forget,” coach Mark Few said later.
