Monday Dots: Early Apple Harvest Returns

September 15, 2025 by UW Dawg Pound

PULLMAN, WA - NOVEMBER 23: UW linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven (25) with the help of some teammates brings down WSU running back James Williams (32) short of the goal line during the game between the Washington State Cougars and the Washington Huskies played on November 23, 2018, at Martin Stadium in Pullman, WA. Happy Monday Dawg fans, and welcome to today’s Dots.

The Dawgs were off this weekend, and looking forward to the 2nd September Apple Cup of the Big Ten era

The Huskies have some payback for the Cougs after last season’s winnable game ended in an L for the Dawgs. As I left Lumen Field that day – surrounded by WSU fans celebrating and chanting R-rated chants – I wondered just how long the Apple Cup tradition would endure…

WSU had five turnovers in the first half against North Texas on Saturday, and was on the wrong side of the Mean Green’s biggest FBS win since 2011: 59-10. The Cougs didn’t score a TD until the 2-minute warning of the 4th quarter. While I hardly expect the Cougs to repeat such a putrid display in Pullman this Saturday, their chances of upsetting the Huskies do appear thin.

  • Our Editor Emeritus Max Vrooman shared the news that WSU voted last week to expand alcohol sales inside Martin Stadium (CougCenter). “The approval comes just in time for WSU’s most anticipated home game of the year, when they welcome in the Washington Huskies for the Apple Cup next Saturday.” When I first heard this, about a dozen jokes popped into my head,, But in all seriousness. Guys… do not give the night off to any EMTs within a hundred-mile radius of Pullman.
  • After an awful 0-3 start, a coaching hire that had me scratching my head from the start has been axed. “UCLA fires coach DeShaun Foster after Bruins start 0-3”. The Huskies play at the Rose Bowl in November.
  • Jon Wilner: “Mailbag: Hot Seats, Jonathan Smith’s options, Jedd Fisch’s future, coaches to watch and spins of the carousel” ($)
  • Idrissa Gaye, UW Daily: “Washington women’s soccer kicks off conference play with 1-0 upset over No.15 USC”

DeShaun Foster had to go, but UCLA’s problems are much deeper than the HC, with no easy solution.

— $200M athletics deficit over the last 6 years.

— No NIL pot of gold

— Complete fan apathy

— Big Ten competitors way more invested in football.

Good luck to the next HC.

Lowest 3 & Out Rates by offense

1. ???????? 3.7%
2. Florida St 4.5%
3. Washington 5.0%
4. Oregon 9.4%
5. Air Force 9.5%

First person to correctly reply with the team with the lowest rate so far earns a virtual high-five.

I love a good comeback story, and they don’t get much better than Ryan Leaf’s. AND since it’s Apple Cup week…

So Arch is gonna lead the nation in passing, be a 1st Team All American, win the Sammy Baugh QB of the year, finish 3rd in the Heisman and play for a Natty??? Sounds like he’s gonna have a pretty damn good season!! #Hookem??? https://t.co/GgYkuE9sbM

Dawgs fall short in five despite a breakout performance from the freshman, Simona.

Mateska has a career-high 19 kills, hitting .366 with 3 aces, 9 digs and 4 blocks.
