Sugar Bowl Referee Makes ‘Worst Call Ever’ In Fourth Quarter

January 3, 2024 by The Spun

NEW ORLEANS, LA – JANUARY 01: Texas running back Jaydon Blue (23) celebrates a touchdown during the All State Sugar Bowl playoff game between the Texas Longhorns and the Washington Huskies on Monday, January 1, 2024 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, LA. During the fourth quarter of the Sugar Bowl, the officiating crew made arguably the worst call we’ve seen this season. Thankfully, the call on the field was corrected after the referees reviewed it.

As Jaydon Blue was trying to get Texas into the red zone, he completely lost the football. It seemed like he lost it as he was bracing for contact.

Even though it was a clear fumble from Blue, the referees said he was down by contact. Washington’s defense couldn’t believe what they just heard.

The same goes for every college football fan watching the Sugar Bowl right now.

“Worst call I have ever seen in my entire life,” one person wrote.

Another fan said, “That’s the worst down by contact call I’ve ever seen and I witnessed this same team get the worst spot in their favor I’ve ever seen.”

Washington was ultimately unable to capitalize on that turnover. Nonetheless, the Huskies are in firm control of this game with a 34-21 lead.

Barring a late-game collapse, Washington is on track to face Michigan in the national title game.
