Urban Meyer Compares Washington To One Of His Former Ohio State Teams

Washington is getting the least recognition of the four teams competing in the College Football Playoff. Urban Meyer thinks everyone should pay more attention to the Huskies.

Meyer praised the undefeated Huskies ahead of their Sugar Bowl semifinal showdown with Texas on New Year’s Eve.

“A coach once said — it stuck with me — a team that won’t be beaten can’t be beat,” Meyer said during On3’s Urban’s Take with Tim May. “Washington is that team this year.”

Meyer admitted that he’s seen more of the other teams than Washington, but he believes the Pac-12 champions are more complete than they credit for beyond star quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

“I kept hearing the defense is not very good, it’s just about Penix. It’s not,” Meyer claimed. “They’re an excellent team, top to bottom excellent team, and they’re one of those teams that will not be beat.”

Meyer then compared Washington to his 2014 Ohio State Buckeyes, who won the national title.

“Cardale Jones goes in at quarterback, and then our defense plays better,” Meyer said. “Cardale Jones goes to quarterback and Zeke Elliott runs for three straight 200+ yard games in the stretch run there.”

Washington played close games down the stretch, notching its final three wins by eight combined points. That includes a 34-31 victory over Oregon to take the Pac-12 championship and a CFP invite.

Texas conversely fell to Oklahoma this season, but the Longhorns are favored in Monday’s matchup in New Orleans. The Huskies were also underdogs when defeating the Ducks for the second time this year.

The Sugar Bowl kicks off at 8:45 p.m. ET on ESPN.
