After the decidedly mixed results of the Mary Nutter Classic, the Husky softball team rebounded in a big way in their journey to San Diego, outscoring their opponents 53-7 across the 5 games this past weekend. Let’s recap a big weekend for the Dawgs’ bats!
In the first game against San Diego State, Jaydn Glab got the scoring started early, with the first of her two home runs in the game coming on the second pitch of the game. Giselle Alvarez followed with a blast of her own, scoring Alexis Deboer, who singled earlier in the inning, to make it 3-0. A Jade Bubke double scored Ava Carroll from second to make it an even 4 run lead for the Huskies before even getting out of the first inning. And it cascaded from there, as the Dawgs would eventually win 16-2 in 5 innings. Jaydn Glab was very productive, driving in 5 runs on 2 hits and walking twice. Kaycie Burdick also had a great game, going 3-4 with a double and 3 runs. Morgan Reimer picked up her 5th win of the season, striking out 5 on 80 pitches.
Next up was Cal Poly, and the result was similar for the Huskies’ offense, scoring an 8-0 victory over the Mustangs. The scoring threat started in the second, as Ava Carroll stretched her single on a hit to Mustang pitcher Kaylee Davis into a trip to second, thanks to a throwing error by Davis. Carroll was eventually brought home by a single from Sophi Mazzola, her first of 2 hits on the day. That would be all for the scoring until a 7 run outburst in the fifth inning, starting with Kaycie Burdick scoring on a wild pitch, and ending with Burdick driving in Tia Durst from second with a double. Durst also deserve special mention for swiping 2 bags in the game. Sophia Ramuno pitched a gem, giving up only 1 hit and fanning 6 on only 68 pitches.
In a Saturday morning clash against Cal State Northridge, it was a similar story. The Huskies started out strong early, with Jaydn Glab doubling, and Alexis Deboer hitting a 2 run shot to make it 2-0. Ava Carroll followed that up with an RBI single, and Sophi Mazzola hit a 3 run home run to make the score 6-0 in the middle of the first. The only trouble came when Morgan Reimer gave up 2 runs to the Matadors in the bottom of the inning. She was relieved in the 4th by Ryan Maddox, who pitched 2 full and forced 4 flyouts. A 2 run Alvarez homer in the top of the second, and a pair of RBI singles from Mazzola and Melody Acevedo pushed the lead to 10-2, where it would hold for the rest of the game, dropping the Matadors to 4-11.
The next game was a rematch with San Diego State, and it played out in a similar fashion to the first contest. The bottom of the first inning moved at a glacial pace, as after an Aztec solo home run by Jazmin Williams in the top of the first, the Huskies forced San Diego State’s 2 pitchers to combine for 60 pitches and scored 9 runs in the process.
A two run homer from Glab in the third pushed the lead to 11-1, and the Huskies would hold steady, with an 11-3 final, thanks to Glab going 3-3 (a triple short of the cycle) with 4 RBI, and Alexis Deboer hitting her 9th home run of the year.
The finale against the Mustangs of Cal Poly capped off an incredible weekend for the Dawgs and allowed them to get off to a roaring start for the month of March. After a Kacie Burdick double drove in Ava Carroll in the bottom of the second, the Huskies batted around in the bottom of the third, with the lion’s share of the runs coming off of a 3 run homer by Ally Hetzel, a Melody Acevado RBI double, and this 3 run triple from Alexis Deboer to cap off a 7 run frame:
From there, that would be all for the Husky bats, as Morgan Reimer held steady and picked up the shutout win after 5, her seventh on the year.
This week, the Huskies take on Seattle U (11-9), before a weekend home set with the Northwestern Wildcats (8-11).
