Wednesday Dots: Best Laid Plans

January 15, 2026 by UW Dawg Pound

Now the Dots are shaken
Now the Dots must fall
There ain’t a winner in the game
You don’t go home with all
Not with all

  • While exact NIL deals are not made public, the 2026 transfer portal has certainly left the impression that the post-House Settlement rules for player compensation have done little to change the wild west image in college football. UW President Robert Jones wants to restore order to college athletics. He was one of four university presidents who signed a joint statement calling for all athletic departments to adhere to the letter and the spirit of the House Settlement rules. I don’t disagree with Jones’s intentions, but I fear that they are little more than that- good intentions.

  • While the football team continues to build out its 2026 roster, the men’s basketball team will be back on the court for one of their biggest home games of the year. The Huskies are expecting a sell-out against #4 Michigan, including plenty of pro scouts. Hannes Steinbach of the Dawgs has generated first round draft buzz, and Michigan is full of pro prospects. Yaxel Lenenborg, a senior forward averaging 15 points for the Wolverines, will also draw lots of eyeballs.

  • With football player movement coming fast and furious, it can be hard to keep up with each individual addition. Dawgman has a breakdown of Kai McClendon’s commitment. The big DL from Mississippi St can help plug the middle and fill the gap left by multiple graduations and transfers on the defensive front. McClendon played quite a bit as a true freshman in ‘24 and missed ‘25 with an injury. If he is healthy entering camp, he should be in the mix for significant playing time up front.

  • In the post-holiday doldrums, nothing is better than getting away from the grey skies to see some sunshine. The Husky women’s tennis team will do just that this week when they open their season in Hawaii, though they will have business on their mind rather than time on the beach. The Dawgs open the season ranked #22 in the country.

Need Hec Ed rocking tomorrow night!
