Cougs set to host Gonzaga today for mid-week matchup

The Cougs will look to avenge a 22-7 loss earlier this month to the Zags

Washington State baseball will host Gonzaga today for a mid-week matchup that will wrap up the season series between the two schools. The Cougs are looking to end the season on some kind of upswing after dropping 11 of their last 13 games and are currently looking to break a three-game losing streak. First pitch today is scheduled for 6:00 pm and can be seen on Pac-12 Insider.

The two teams met earlier this month in Spokane and the Zags absolutely ran away with it. They put up 14 runs in the first inning followed by a 1-run third inning, and a 6-run fourth inning to go up 21-6. They then tacked on an extra run in the 8th for good measure and would go on to win 22-7.

This past weekend, the Cougs played down in Tucson against 19th ranked Arizona. After trailing 5-3 heading into the ninth inning on Friday, the Cougs put up 4 of their own to take the lead 7-5. The Wildcats answered back in the bottom of the inning and would come back to put up 3 to win 8-7

Saturday saw the Cougs struggle a little bit more as they managed to bring just 1 run across the plate and gave the Wildcats a 7-1 victory.

Sunday seemed destined for more of the same as the Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the second. The Cougs put up 3 of their own before Arizona battled back and took a 6-5 lead into the ninth inning. Crew Parke lined a single up the middle and then was bunted over before being brought in to score the tying run on an RBI-single up the middle for the Cougs. They then struggled in the 11th inning as they loaded the bases by hitting two Wildcat batters and an intentional walk before an RBI single up the middle brought in the game-winner.

The Zags are coming off of a series victory over Portland over the weekend. They took the first game 2-1 before dropping the second game 4-3. They then bounced back with a 13-9 victory on Sunday.

The Cougs will stay at home after their game today and will host Fresno State for a 3-game series beginning on Friday at 6:05 pm. Their second game is scheduled to begin at 6:05 pm on Saturday with the series finale on Sunday at 1:05 pm. All three games can be streamed on the WSU website.
