QB1!

Good evening, Coug fans!

Your very own Washington State Cougars are locked and loaded gearing up for the upcoming season – and per tradition, it’s almost time for depth charts. While the full breakdown has yet to be announced (at the time of writing this, Monday August 19th 2024), it was announced that John Mateer has earned the spot of starting Quarterback against Portland State on August 31st.

John Mateer has been named Washington State’s starting QB for the upcoming season. He beats out Bryant transfer Zevi Eckhaus for the job. @kxly4news

Mateer is no stranger to Coug fans, stepping up during the 2023 season, landing 13 of 17 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns, and ended up catching two passes for 14 yards!

It isn’t a total surprise Mateer got the nod, given his previous season performance. We saw him mostly come on the field (in each game last season, mind you) to shake up opponents, considering even fans didn’t know if he’d be catching or throwing. But a QB who can handle surprises is exactly what the doctor ordered for this season, as Ben Arbuckle continues to develop his tone for Washington State’s offense.

Mateer landed the gig above senior transfer Zevi Eckhaus, former Bryant University Bulldog. Eckhaus had impressive numbers during his time at Bryant, and will likely deliver some excellent plays this season.

The countdown begins! Go Cougs!
