The 2021 woes continued for Washington State (1-3, 0-2 Pac-12) this week, this time falling to the Utah Utes (2-2, 1-0) by a score of 24-13. While Utah ultimately walked away from this game with a win, neither fanbase should be overly optimistic looking forward.
The Utes fumbled seven(!) times and barely beat a team without its starting quarterback and running back — Max Borghi left the game before halftime with an injury and did not return. Meanwhile, WSU has now lost five straight conference games, something that hasn’t happened since the Paul Wulff era.
Graduate transfer Jarrett Guarantano proved why Jayden de Laura won the starting job with three interceptions and a general inability to move the ball past midfield. The sole touchdown for Guarantano came early in the second half when the Utes gifted WSU the ball on a fumble just outside the red zone.
This week’s gold star goes to outside receivers De’Zhaun Stribling and Donovan Ollie, who both set career bests in receptions and yards. Stribling led the receiving corps on Saturday with 6 receptions and 93 yards, plus his first touchdown donning the crimson and gray. The youth movement currently taking place at outside receiver should pay dividends down the road, despite growing pains early on.
The road trip continues, with a struggling California team playing host to Rolovich and Co. next weekend. CougCenter was at Rice-Eccles Field covering the game’s biggest moments and plays. Enjoy!
