Washington State Welcomes San Jose State (GAME THREAD)

September 21, 2024 by Coug Center

Jack Ellis/CougCenter

Can’t overlook this one.

Greetings, Coug fans. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been on an Apple Cup high all week and will likely be this way the entire season. What a feeling.

As fans, we get the luxury of keeping that sweet, sweet Apple Cup victory in our minds for as long as we darn well please. But let’s hope our football team is laser focused on the San Jose State Spartans, who will run out of the visitor’s tunnel tonight at 7 p.m.

This is the perfect trap game for the Cougs, who also need to refrain from looking ahead to next week’s battle down in Boise.

San Jose State’s 3-0 record should be enough to get the attention of WSU. So should the numbers of Spartan quarterback – and former WSU quarterback – Emmett Brown. He’s completing passes at a 60% clip and has nine touchdowns to his two interceptions.

Sure, San Jose State’s wins have come over sub-par competition (Sacramento State, Air Force and Kennesaw State), but it’s clear the Spartans can score at a solid rate.

WSU’s bend-don’t-break defense has been its calling card in wins over Texas Tech and Washington. Keeping the opposition to field goals and nabbing the occasional takeaway will need to be the theme once again.

John Mateer will do John Mateer things. He may even roll off some highlight reels with his legs. We’ll find out tonight at 7 p.m. Talk about it here.

When

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. It’s going to be a late night.

Where

Gesa Field, under the lights. There are fireworks planned for after the game if you’re into that.

How to Watch

The CW, with J.B. Long and Michael Bumpus on the call. One of these days I’ll remember how to find The CW on my YouTube TV. Maybe today’s the day!

The Line

WSU -12, the O/U is 55.5
