Week Two #1 Ranked Stanford Tops The Cougs

September 5, 2024 by Coug Center

Ashley Davis

The Trees strike again.

Much to no one’s surprise, the Cougs fell short on Sunday to the Trees 2-0. However, Washington State really gave them a tough go! The Cougs battled fiercly, with Grayson Lynch striking the post within the first three minutes and Nadia made a HUGE penalty kick save as well to keep it even, but Stanford was able to capitalize still on their chances. A 2-0 lead at half found the Cougs chasing wherever they could for a goal while refusing to worsen the deficit, and unfortunately they couldn’t put one in. But no reason to hang your heads on the season! Stanford is #1 in the country for a reason, and there’s still plenty of great soccer left to see from our Cougs! Most notably from this match – a corner kick, which was THIRTEEN TO ONE – that is 13 – 1 in layman‘s terms, in favor of Wazzu- a stunning feat to pull off at Stanford. WSU stayed just as physical, and had nearly as many looks (5 to Stanford’s 8 shots) on goal! A lot of credit should go to Stanford for managing to shut the Cougs down, as they were a brick wall defensively, blocking shots and deflections all game long.

The biggest thing to glean from Sunday is that the Cougs (as always) can ABSOLUTELY hang with anyone in the country, at home or away, and they really only can be beat by their own error. The sky is the limit for these Cougs and I (as well as a whole bunch of other WSU fans) will be watching devoutly all season long to see them succeed.

You can catch the Cougs again this Thursday at UC Irvine for 90s Night for a 7pm PT kickoff which will jump start a FANTASTIC Cougar Weekend! Should be a bunch of fun and pretty good weather as it cools down a bit to 84° by kick! Then, to close out the weekend, on Sunday the Cougs play the OTHER half of the UC schools, UC San Diego at 1pm PT for Youth Day.

Both games will be on ESPN+ for those who can’t make the trip, but for all students and family and alumni who are coming for the big athletic weekend, please feel free to stop by and cheer on your Cougs! Have a great Cougar Weekend and you already know it….GO COUGS!
