The game was supposed to tip off at a very weird 12 p.m. PT today.
Specifics are not yet available — and might never be — but it we know this: The positive test and/or contact tracing and existing injuries were extensive enough to deplete WSU’s roster to the point that the game could not be played today.
It is interesting to note that the school used the word “postponed” rather than “canceled”; the school is not ruling out playing the game in Las Vegas — where the Pac-12 Tournament will be held — before the tournament commences on March 10. WSU has no more games on its schedule, and ASU has a pair of games this weekend, at Colorado and Utah. It seems like the most likely scenario is playing it on March 8 if WSU’s COVID and injury issues are resolved.
Coincidentally, today’s weird noon matinee was put on the schedule last week to make up for its postponement earlier in the season. It was supposed to have been played in Pullman on New Year’s Eve, but the Sun Devils’ own COVID issues prevented it. WSU and ASU just played on Saturday — with the Cougars losing in overtime.
