3 Quarterbacks the Seahawks Could Pursue if They Move On From Geno Smith

January 11, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Seahawks quarterbacks

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald has said that he wants quarterback Geno Smith to be back with Seattle in 2025. However, that doesn’t mean he will be. The Seahawks have had a bit of a quarterback dilemma this year despite having a terrible offensive line up front. They recently fired offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb after one season so changes could very well be coming.

What options does Seattle have if they decide to move on from Smith? Only a few names make the most sense for the Seahawks to have a successful year in 2025.

Quarterbacks the Seahawks Could Pursue if They Move On From Geno Smith

Justin Fields

Justin Fields went 4-2 as the starter earlier in the season before the Steelers decided to make former Seahawk Russell Wilson the starting quarterback. To some, the decision has been questionable as Wilson ended up going 6-5 despite Pittsburgh making the playoffs. Fields has shown that he can perform well when he has the right talent and coaches to support him.

Fields threw for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and only one interception in six games. He also rushed for another 289 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

He isn’t the most polished passer but could manage the offense well enough when the priority will be the run game.

J.J. McCarthy

Rumors about a potential trade that would send J.J. McCarthy to Seattle are growing hot right now. McCarthy played quarterback at Michigan from 2021 to 2023 where Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald also happened to be the defensive coordinator in 2021. If McCarthy was in this year’s draft class, he’d be considered QB1 by many.

While he’s only played a few drives during the preseason, McCarthy has shown to be a promising quarterback in the NFL. He knows what it takes to lead a team to a National Championship and to win the big game.

While the Minnesota Vikings drafted McCarthy to be their future franchise quarterback, it’s unknown what they will decide to do at the end of the season considering the breakout season Sam Darnold has had.

Jaxson Dart

If the Seahawks take a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, it won’t be until the mid-t0-late rounds. The most common name tied to Seattle in the draft is Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart. Dart is currently rising up draft boards and is being labeled as a potential “steal” of the draft. His above-average arm strength would be exciting to see in connection with receivers like D.K. Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Dart had his best season as a passer this year. He threw for 4,279 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. He also ranks first amongst college quarterbacks in passer rating with 180.7.

Recently it was revealed Dart could be seeking another year of eligibility with Ole Miss. If he does indeed declare for the draft, the Seahawks should consider drafting him. He could potentially be another third-round quarterback to lead them to a Super Bowl win in the future.
