Chiefs, Panthers Could Pounce On Two-Time All-Pro Free Agent

April 8, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

free agent tyler lockett

Two-time All-Pro free-agent wide receiver Tyler Lockett is still available on the market, but he should be signing with a new team soon. According to reports, the veteran continues to receive interest as his name floats around in plenty of rumors. Originally selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the former Kansas State product began his career as a punt return specialist for the Seattle Seahawks, setting a record as a rookie earning several monthly awards and was the lone rookie to be named to the All-Pro list. Following that season, Lockett became a reliable pass catcher in the aerial attack for former veteran quarterback Russell Wilson.

The wide receiver was able to amass four consistent seasons’ worth of 1,000 yards each. However, the veteran is coming off a subpar year, and to no surprise of his release, the Seahawks are building a new regime under head coach Mike Macdonald. It was bound for Lockett to move on as the team is sticking with standout Jaxon Smith-Njigba as the primary receiver and will be pairing him with Cooper Kupp and a potential weapon in this year’s draft. No matter who Lockett ends up with, he brings a lot of experience for a team that could use him in the right moments.

He may not be the same player that everyone remembers. However, the wide receiver could join a contender to win a Super Bowl or start anew to help mentor other young wideouts. These two teams could be the best fits for him.

Super Bowl Journey

The Kansas City Chiefs are entering the 2025 season with a lot of question marks in their wide receiving department. Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice can’t seem to stay out of trouble, so that’s a story to watch as the offseason progresses. However, the Chiefs were quick to re-sign veteran Marquise Brown to a one-year deal following the Worthy incident. Despite that, the team will continue without DeAndre Hopkins, who left for their rival, the Baltimore Ravens.

The situation in Kansas City will be an ear-by-ear as the team will have to wait, whoever steps up in their aerial attack. Last season, quarterback Patrick Mahomes didn’t play up to standards despite the third Super Bowl appearance, later collapsing to the powerful Eagles defense. Tyler Lockett might be slowing down, but if the Chiefs sign him even on a one-year deal, the team should be in good business. It won’t be perfect, and he isn’t long-term, but Mahomes could bring a spark out of Lockett.

Starting from Scratch

As for the Carolina Panthers, they have two promising pass catchers in Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker. Despite Adam Thielen’s return, this could be his last season, so they could use another veteran in the wideout department. Lockett won’t win the job over Thielen, and he doesn’t need to to make an impact. These two veterans could help step in at crucial moments when the competition increases in the NFC and help open the field for quarterback Bryce Young.
