Chiefs Reportedly Interested In 1,300-Yard Weapon

February 23, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

DK Metcalf Chiefs

With the Seattle Seahawks coming off of their fifth straight season of failing to make the Divisional Round, big changes could be coming. This could include moving star wide receiver DK Metcalf. With Jaxon Smith-Njigba emerging at such a young age (23), the Seahawks could look to move off of Metcalf’s contract and get some pieces for the future. One team that is reportedly interested in trading for DK Metcalf is the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chiefs Reportedly Interested In DK Metcalf

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off of yet another Super Bowl appearance. However, the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Chiefs this time, 40-22. The score was never this close either as the Chiefs were down 34-6 entering the fourth quarter. Kansas City consistently struggled to push the football down the field. One major for this was a lack of weapons on the outside. The Chiefs number one receiver, Rashee Rice, went down with a season-ending knee injury in week four, leaving a void on the outside. Even with Rice returning next season, the Chiefs offense could become even more explosive with the addition of Metcalf.

Positives And Negatives

This move would give a slowly-aging Chiefs team and quarterback Patrick Mahomes a wide receiver in his prime. Metcalf is still only 27 years old and is already very accomplished at the receiver position. Since entering the league, DK Metcalf has accumulated at least 900 receiving yards in every season. He posted 992 receiving yards last season even though he had the second least targets for a season in his career. These numbers are all with Geno Smith at quarterback. While he is a good quarterback, he is definitely not Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs offense could see a rejuvenation if they can find a way to get Metcalf.

Although this trade would make Kansas City extremely dangerous, there are a couple of drawbacks to a potential move for DK Metcalf. First off, the Chiefs do not have enough cap space to afford Metcalf. He would have to agree to sign a new extension immediately after arriving.

Another negative of a potential trade of DK Metcalf to the Kansas City Chiefs is the other holes on the Chiefs’ roster. The Philadelphia Eagles exposed a number of flaws on the Chiefs, the main one being the offensive line. The Eagles’ defensive line consistently dominated Kansas City’s offensive line, leaving Patrick Mahomes constantly scrambling to buy more time. If the Chiefs choose to bring in DK Metcalf, they will have almost zero cap space left to boost the offensive line.

Could This Really Happen?

In short, yes this move could happen. However, it’s still unlikely. It would be very difficult to work financially on both sides. However, if the Chiefs believe that DK Metcalf moves the needle even further for them, a deal can still get done. The Seahawks will likely seek some draft picks and young players in return. The Chiefs would have to put together an extremely enticing package if a trade for DK Metcalf is going to work.
