Don’t forget the other contract extension the Seahawks are facing

This offseason and much of training camp has largely been dominated by the Jamal Adams and Duane Brown contract situations. Adams has got his new deal to be the NFL’s highest paid safety, while reports have surfaced that the Seattle Seahawks and Brown are at least engaging in some new discussions.

But let’s remember the other half of the safety pairing, because his contract is expiring soon and he’s dropped cryptic hints that he knows it too.

Can’t deny me what I deserve.

Quandre Diggs was acquired by Seattle from the Detroit Lions for just a fifth-round pick back in 2019, and he’s quickly become one of the team’s best defensive players. This season is the last one of his current deal — a $5.95 million base salary and a cap charge of just over $6.1 million.

Diggs has not participated in preseason and has been absent the last two days of practice. We won’t really know what’s up with Quandre until Friday, so it could be a nagging injury or him going the route of Brown and Adams and not practicing until he gets a new deal.

Pete Carroll described Quandre Diggs not practicing yesterday as the veteran safety getting a day off. Well, Diggs is here but not taking part for the second straight day. He’s in the last year of his contract, made the Pro Bowl last season and wants a new deal from Seattle.

We’ll see where this leads. The Seahawks have fairly good depth at safety (as evidenced by Ryan Neal’s play last season) and while Marquise Blair and Ugo Amadi are playing at slot corner, they were both drafted originally as safeties and both can take Diggs’ spot at free safety. But Diggs has certainly earned a pay bump and we’ll soon find out whether or not the Seahawks will get a deal done before free agency.
