In the 2010s safety Earl Thomas was one of the key players on the Seattle Seahawks’ famed “Legion of Boom.” But a recent case of identity theft has disrupted his retirement.

According to NOLA.com via the New York Post, police have arrested Kevin J. Thompson, the boyfriend of Thomas’ ex-wife, over an alleged $1.9 million scam where he stole Thomas’ identity. Thompson now faces charges of identity theft, forgery, money laundering, credit card fraud, computer fraud and bank fraud.

Thompson is alleged to have stolen from Thomas’ bank account, cashed his NFL checks and transferred ownership of several vehicles owned by the former All-Pro safety.

“Thompson allegedly used a forged driver’s license that had his own photo and Thomas’ information to make a bogus bank account and transfer auto titles, including one for a Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV, which he drove to the bank on the day he was arrested,” the Post wrote.

As “strange stories involving Earl Thomas” go, this isn’t No. 1. But it’s in the top three. A man impersonating Thomas allegedly stole money and cars from the former All-Pro safety. https://t.co/ZyKbYxggN3

Earl Thomas was a first-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and by his second season was already one of the best safeties in the league. His coverage and tackling skills led to four straight All-Pro selections and five straight Pro Bowls between 2011 and 2015, during which he also finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2013.

Thomas won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks and played nine of his 10 years in Seattle with his final year being played with the Baltimore Ravens.
