They don’t have to be Seahawks players to be included.
We’re in the quiet part of the NFL offseason where there’s very little news to report and we’re mostly biding our time until Seattle Seahawks training camp begins. This is where fun community discussion posts come in handy!
Field Gulls is a place for Seattle Seahawks fans, obviously, but we’re also (presumably) NFL fans. Some of us were NFL fans first before settling on the Seahawks as a favorite team.
Today’s discussion is all about which players made you fall in love with the gridiron game. This can include Seahawks players but it is not limited to former (or even current, for some of our newer NFL converts) Seahawks. It’d be hard not to find a 1990s football fan who didn’t love watching Barry Sanders, who is undeniably one of the most electrifying and thrilling players in the history of the sport. Growing up in the Bay Area, I got to see a lot of Steve Young, Jerry Rice, and a young Terrell Owens on TV. When I moved away, I actually got a Jevon Kearse poster from school. I’ve never been anywhere close to Nashville but the former Tennessee Titans star really was ‘The Freak’ in the early portion of his career. When I played Madden as a kid I’d often use the New York Jets for Curtis Martin and the Indianapolis Colts for Edgerrin James, so you can tell I have an affinity for running backs.
I think the easiest answer for favorite Seahawk when I became a fan was Shaun Alexander, whose elite last name combined with his elite rushing abilities helped propel Seattle to playoff and eventually Super Bowl contention. I’m curious to know how many Seahawks fans who endured the dreadful 1990s fell in love with the team in part because of how awesome the late Cortez Kennedy was. Seattle was anywhere from historically bad to just maddeningly mediocre, but ‘Tez was consistently dominant.
