New Details Emerge From Steelers Trade With Seahawks

September 4, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

A general view of the Pittsburgh Steelers stadium.

We have new details to share surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ Friday trade with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Steelers have acquired cornerback Akhello Witherspoon from the Seattle Seahawks. It’s a significant move by a Pittsburgh team in need of help in the secondary. Seattle, meanwhile, had no use for Witherspoon after he lost his starting gig during training camp.

Friday’s trade is a win-win for both sides. The Seahawks shipped off Witherspoon and his $4 million contract to the Steelers, who are more than happy to take on the money considering how much help they need at cornerback. So what is Seattle getting in return?

The Steelers are sending a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to Seattle for Witherspoon. They’ve also waived defensive lineman Henry Mondeaux to make room for Witherspoon on the 53-man roster.

“We have acquired CB Ahkello Witherspoon from the Seattle Seahawks for our 2023 fifth-round pick, pending a physical,” Pittsburgh announced via Twitter. “To make room on the 53-man roster, we released DL Henry Mondeaux.”

Witherspoon spent the first four years of his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers where he became an integral member of their secondary. During those four years, he had 117 total tackles and four picks. He then signed with Seattle earlier this offseason shortly after becoming a free agent.

The Seahawks had big plans for Witherspoon, but other players in the secondary emerged and took his starting spot. He’ll now have a chance to play a significant role for the Steelers defense later this fall.
