The Seahawks will look to gain some ground against one of their biggest rivals to start the season.
The Seattle Seahawks’ 2025 schedule has arrived, and it begins with a home contest against the San Francisco 49ers at Lumen Field. Having lost to the Niners at home in each of the last three seasons, the Seahawks will head into the season opener looking to snap that streak.
Currently, FanDuel Sportsbook has Seattle as 1.5-point underdogs vs. San Francisco. Obviously, we are still a ways out from the start of the season, but every game matters in the early going. The Seahawks defeated the 49ers in Santa Clara in 2024, although San Francisco still has the edge overall; prior to Seattle’s aforementioned victory in Week 11 of last season, the Niners won six consecutive contests against the Seahawks dating back to 2022.
Neither team got to where they wanted to be in 2024—despite starting the campaign 3-0 under new head coach Mike Macdonald, Seattle lost five of their next six games to fall to 4-5 entering the bye week. The Seahawks found themselves on the upswing thereafter, winning four in a row to climb back to 8-5, but lost some steam in December with back-to-back losses against the Packers and Vikings. By the time Seattle defeated the Bears and Rams to close out the season, the playoffs were looking out of reach, and Los Angeles claimed the NFC West division title on a strength of victory tiebreaker to eliminate the Seahawks. Seattle missed the postseason for the second consecutive year, but they still performed well in their first season without Pete Carroll as head coach since 2009.
On the other side, San Francisco had a rough go of it, being hampered by injuries all throughout the year. After reaching Super Bowl LVIII the previous season, the 49ers were a favorite to win the NFC West once again, or at least contend for the playoffs. These hopes did not come to pass, however, as San Francisco found themselves struggling to stay at .500 for much of the season. The Niners got to 5-4 in November but ultimately fell apart over the season’s final weeks, losing seven of their last eight games to finish 6-11, their worst showing since 2020. With key players like Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, and Trent Williams all missing time recovering from injuries in 2024, San Francisco is seeking to enter 2025 a bit healthier against the Seahawks.
Seattle’s biggest goal this off-season is taking the next step forward as they enter year two of Macdonald’s tenure as head coach. The Seahawks have made some notable moves up to this point, including signing former 49ers quarterback Sam Darnold to replace the departed Geno Smith, signing former Rams wide receiver and Super Bowl MVP Cooper Kupp, and drafting North Dakota State offensive lineman Grey Zabel. In addition to the loss of Smith, DK Metcalf is now gone as well.
Likewise, San Francisco has made a few moves of their own, re-signing George Kittle and Kyle Juszczyk to multi-year extensions in an effort to rebound from an injury-riddled 2024. On top of this, the Niners have moved on from Deebo Samuel and Jordan Mason, trading them to the Commanders and Vikings, respectively. Needless to say, Kyle Shanahan’s team will look a bit different this coming season despite retaining a few key players on offense.
The 50th season of Seahawks football will be an interesting one for sure, and what better way to make it exciting than by starting the year against the 49ers? Year two of the Mike Macdonald era is sure to be one to remember.
Seattle’s 2025 season opener will take place against San Francisco at Lumen Field on Sept. 7 at 1:05 PM PT on FOX.
