Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is calling for the ban of the “hip drop” tackle after last night’s game.
Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith came up limping after being taken down by a “hip drop” tackle, in which a player’s body weight falls on the player he is tackling. New York Giants linebacker Isaiah Simmons was guilty of the hit on Smith, who was furious after the play and called the tackle “dirty” postgame.
On Tuesday, Carroll said the Seahawks are “lucky” Smith seemingly avoided a serious injury while advocating for legislating that type of tackle out of football.
“It just should have been recognized,” Carroll said, via Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. “… I don’t even care about the penalty. We’ve just got to get that out of ball. It’s so dangerous.”
Smith left the game briefly after the play and was replaced by Drew Lock. He returned in the second half.
“I really don’t got much to say about it,” Simmons said to ESPN about the hit. “We playing football. He’s mad he got hit? What do most quarterbacks do when they don’t want to get hit? They go down. I don’t really know what else to tell him about that.”
The Seahawks have a bye this week, giving Smith some time to heal up before returning to action Oct. 15.
