Seattle Seahawks veteran wideout Tyler Lockett is likely a cut candidate this upcoming offseason. According to Over the Cap, Lockett carries a high salary into the 2025 season where the Seahawks may release him to free up some space. However, Seattle has already begun doing so by restructuring defensive lineman Leonard Williams’ contract but that hasn’t been doing much so that will force the team to release some players, including Lockett. Some rumors were floating that the Seahawks are going to trade wide receiver DK Metcalf but the chances of that happening are low considering they would lose their main option.
This is why they could release Lockett who is aging and hasn’t been producing much of anything in recent memory. Originally selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the former Kansas State product came into the league as a reliable return specialist under former Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson before converting to a full-time pass catcher. Even with restructuring his contract, the Seahawks are not getting much out of him and since the team has been building a new regime under head coach Mike Macdonald, it’s safe to say that Lockett’s release could come as early as the new league year begins. Recording 49 catches for 600 yards and two touchdowns were his lowest since 2017 so he’s showing early signs of regression that it might be time to move on.
Teams like the Chargers, Panthers and Texans could have a chance to bring out his nostalgic self. The veteran has plenty in the tank and could be a dependable option during the NFL postseason next year.

Rebuilding Herbert’s Pass Game
The Los Angeles Chargers have a promising offensive roster with quarterback Justin Herbert that has a lot of bright spots. However, it didn’t work out in the wild-card loss against the Texans since Herbert didn’t have enough talented wide receivers to lead the organization. Being that rookie Ladd McConkey was the only reliable set of hands, it’s easy to see why the Chargers should be in the market for a wide receiver. Quentin Johnston was looking like his former rookie self and didn’t make it any better after leaving his first postseason game with no catches.
Meanwhile, Joshua Palmer and DJ Chark will hit free agency so the team should get a few consistent receivers to accommodate McConkey. They wouldn’t need to be explosive but perhaps, they could sign Lockett to a one-year deal if he becomes available and see what he could do. Palmer may have had his downfall moments but the team may want to bank on him too to see if he improves.
Other Suitors
As for the Carolina Panthers, it’s hard to tell what the team will be looking for when trying to build a legitimate offense for quarterback Bryce Young. Last offseason, the team brought in Diontae Johnson from a trade and Jonathan Mingo from the 2024 NFL Draft. They didn’t work out which leaves Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker as the only two dependable weapons for Young. Perhaps, they could sign Lockett on a veteran low-cost deal to help build experience for the entire offense.
On the other hand, the Houston Texans need to find a way to bring back Stefon Diggs. After losing Tank Dell to a brutal injury, they don’t have a lot of options in the receiving department other than Nico Collins. Robert Woods will be a free agent so this could mean they might have a viable replacement out of Tyler Lockett to take his role.
