Seahawks solve the Duane Brown problem

The Seattle Seahawks have now retained their two biggest offseason hold-ins.

After extending safety Jamal Adams last month, Duane Brown and the Seahawks have reached an agreement.

Gregg Bell reported a couple of weeks ago that the rumors had picked back up in regards to Brown’s dissatisfaction. As Brown turns 36 this month, and still has a solid year left on his contract, reports had been consistent that Seattle was hesitant to up and provide a new deal.

he didn’t say #Seahawks were necessarily going to give Duane Brown a new deal beyond 2021 just yet, maybe a “creative” solution with a short-term “sweetener” or something of the like. Either way, some movement between the team and its all-important LT Russell Wilson wants back

As it turns out, the two sides have been able to come to an agreement after all, and Seattle’s only good offensive lineman at way too many points of Russell Wilson’s career will be set to take the field by Week 1. It’s not a contract extension, but it’s a reworking of the final year of his deal that converts bonuses into guaranteed money. A void year for 2022 is also included.

Seahawks and OT Duane reached agreement on a reworked contract that maxes out at $12 million for this season, per source. The deal converts per-game bonuses to guaranteed money while getting an injury protection benefit for 2022.

A voidable year added to the deal for #Seahawks LT Duane Brown to give him that injury protection in 2022. Solid compromise all around to get him on the field and ready for Week 1. https://t.co/InN3wzXgdG

Russell Wilson had been personally lobbying for the team to get this done with Brown, who is as reliable on the field as he is reported to be in the locker room.

Now the only true question mark on the offensive line – for a second season – should be at center, with Ethan Pocic trying to recover quickly from a hamstring injury. For now it looks like Kyle Fuller will be the starter.

But after a bit of drama and early injuries, everything is starting to click together extremely well for the Seahawks just in time for the regular season. The next contract of importance to get settled is safety Quandre Diggs, who is expected to play but there’s no movement yet on a possible extension for him.
