Seattle Seahawks Expected to Release All-Pro Star Strong Safety

February 17, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Seahawks expected release Adams

The Seattle Seahawks are expected to release All-Pro star strong safety, Jamal Adams who suffered a season-ending injury. Seattle is beginning a new era in 2024 under new head coach Mike Macdonald. Usually, when a new coach comes in, there are plenty of changes across the roster and more is expected from the Seahawks. The defensive-minded coach has some major decisions to make, but they don’t only involve free agents and potential draft picks.

Seattle is already facing a glaring issue with Adams’ productivity on the field. Also, his contract cost keeps rising but after this injury, this wraps up his days in Seattle. Adams arrived with the Seahawks in 2020 in a trade where he came off winning two Pro Bowls. He had a promising debut season with the Seahawks by earning another Pro Bowl, but that all came crashing down after.

Adams has been in and out of games after 2020. He only appeared in 23 out of a possible 51 games with just one game played in 2022. If he gets cut now before June 1st then the Seahawks would free up $6 million in salary cap. However, he’s going to cost a hefty amount of $26.9 million against the cap.

It probably won’t be a fast process to fully cut him all around from the team. Seattle General Manager John Schneider would save the team $17.5 million if they cut Adams after June 1st. The dead weight cap would be spreaded out as $10.4 million over the next two years. It was the fall of Adams that affected his chances to remain with the team.

The Fall of His Career

Adams was dealing with injuries all last season until according to reports, he was not feeling right. The Seahawks moved him to IR which ended his season. However, he wasn’t able to play at the level that the Seahawks wanted when he was “healthy.” After that, Seattle decided that maybe a break would be best to give both sides time to think things through for the future.

The once-upon-a-time superstar has not been the same who recently went through surgery to recover from his injury. Adams hasn’t been able to perform at his peak, but now if he gets cut then he could get another opportunity elsewhere. He was linked to landing with the Dallas Cowboys at one point, but the opportunity called his name in Seattle. However, he could still get interest from other teams that need to fill their safety needs.

A big pill that the Seahawks probably have to swallow is that the trade was a failure. There were high expectations for him after an illustrious debut season with Seattle, but the injuries caught up. Seattle is already dealing with potentially losing a couple of defensive players due to the salary cap situation.

A New Era Begins

After firing Pete Carroll, there is a new era that’s forming in the organization. It may be time to admit that the trade for Adams was an error. However, the good news is that the Seahawks are heading towards cleaning up the mess. The bad news would be is releasing one of what used to be a star, will be gone. Many will anticipate what will happen with Adams if he decides to hang up the cleats or find a new team.
