Taylor Swift’s concert at Lumen Field was so rowdy that it caused seismic activity equivalent to that of a 2.3 magnitude earthquake.
The seismic activity from Swift’s concert reminded people in Seattle of Marshawn Lynch’s touchdown run against the Saints in the 2010 playoffs. However, the “Eras Tour” concert managed to make more noise.
According to seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach, the fans at Swift’s concert made so much noise that it was twice as strong as the “Beast Quake” from Lynch.
“The shaking was twice as strong as ‘Beast Quake’. It absolutely doubled it,” Caplan-Auerbach said.
“The primary difference is the duration of shaking,” Caplan-Auerbach explained. “Cheering after a touchdown lasts for a couple seconds, but eventually it dies down. It’s much more random than a concert. For Taylor Swift, I collected about 10 hours of data where rhythm controlled the behavior. The music, the speakers, the beat. All that energy can drive into the ground and shake it.”
This puts into perspective just how entertaining Swift’s concerts can get.
With the NFL season coming up, the Seahawks will have a chance to match the seismic activity that came from Swift’s concert. That’ll be a tall task though.
