The cap impact for the Jamal Adams extension

Tuesday the Seattle Seahawks and safety Jamal Adams finally reached agreement on a four year contract extension that will keep the All Pro in the Pacific Northwest for the next five years. Now that the ink has dried on the deal, the terms of the contract have been released, and the impact of the contract on the salary cap for the team can be evaluated.

Without wasting time, here’s a look at the cap hit impact for the contract based on the report from ProFootballTalk.

Under the newly signed contract Adams will be a member of the Seahawks for the next five years for a hair north of $80M, and in particular will carry combined cap hits of just $14.11M over the next two seasons. There are some additional incentives that Adams can hit to earn up to $2M extra over the course of the contract, but they are not material to the analysis at this point due their relatively small size.

In any case, the extension frees up $4.86M in 2021 cap space, which will, of course, only lead to speculation regarding the potential of the team to add a big named free agent in the coming weeks. Whether that could mean the return of K.J. Wright or the addition of other bigger names still available on the market remains to be seen.

What is known at this point, however, is what it will cost the team to have Adams around for the next five years.
