Daniel Mengden vs. Wade LeBlanc
The Mariners have survived against the A’s this year, but this time they have to face Oakland on their home turf for a three-game set. The A’s are heavily favored, 60-40, in all three of these games, although the Mariners will be facing a slate of pitchers they’ve already seen in Daniel Mengden, Mike Fiers, and Brett Anderson.

Wade LeBlanc will make his second start back after coming off the IL and will look to improve upon a fairly disastrous outing against Minnesota. Luckily, the bullpen is fresh and rested off yesterday’s off-day and…oh wait, I’m being informed the Mariners bullpen being fresh and rested isn’t actually any kind of an advantage. You’d like to believe the high-flying offense that picked some shaky picking up early in the season could do it again, but the bats have suffered a power outage in the month of May. From March until May 1, the Mariners offense struck out a lot, but also had baseball’s fifth-highest walk rate, and the second-highest ISO mark. In May, they’re still striking out a lot, but they have the fifth-lowest walk rate in baseball and have fallen to eighth in ISO. With a hard to watch offense (and defense, and pitching) combined with a hard-to-listen to environment in Oakland (the drums feel like a personal attack), I won’t blame anyone for following this one from a safe distance. We’ll have the recap for you either way.
Some roster news: RHP Ryan Garton cleared waivers and was assigned back to Triple-A Tacoma. Yesterday LHP Zac Rosscup was claimed off waivers by Toronto, who apparently have room in their bullpen for a lefty specialist with a K/BB ratio of 1.4. The Mariners also acquired 27-year-old corner infielder Mike Ahmed from the Dodgers for cash. Ahmed will help fill the Chris Mariscal-shaped hole at Double-A Arkansas until Joe Rizzo is ready to move up. if that point should come this season. Rizzo, Seattle’s second-round draft choice in 2016, had a down year in his first full season at High-A as a 20-year-old, but he’s off to a strong start this year, leading the California League in hitting.
