Sunday like a Saturday
Baseball, baseball, baseball. What do I have to say about you today?
Not much, probably. A late-May day game between two mediocre teams doesn’t exactly get the adrenaline going. But wait, what’s this? The A’s have not one, but TWO (2) Matts in the starting lineup? Plus a Mark and a Marcus? Who could have possibly seen this coming?
Unquestionably the biggest news of the afternoon is that today in Oakland, California, in front of approximately 18 people and probably some awful person with a drum, a real life human being named SKYE BOLT will play right field in a Major League Baseball game. Truly immense.
On the Mariners’ side, Kyle Seager moves up to the second spot in the lineup, sliding J.P. Crawford into the nine hole. Tim Beckham makes his second start at second base, while Tom Murphy gets a chance to play against the A’s left-handed starting pitcher. Today also marks the 21st time that said pitcher, Brett Anderson, will pitch against the Seattle Mariners. In his 20 previous showdowns with Seattle, the finesse-based lefty is 8-5 with a 2.38 ERA and 90 strikeouts to just 24 walks.
His 117 innings tossed at Mariner hitters is by far the most Anderson has completed against any team, with the second-place Angels at a distant 73.1. Of the M’s in today’s starting nine, Kyle Seager unsurprisingly has seen Anderson the most (14 at-bats), while Tim Beckham has had the most success (.429 average and a home run in seven at-bats).
Move over, Golden State Warriors. Five straight trips to the NBA Finals is absolutely irrelevant compared to Mike Leake vs. Brett Anderson.
