8/23/21: Open Game Thread

MLB: Seattle Mariners at Texas Rangers
Raymond Carlin III-USA TODAY Sports

the must-win series starts now

What an absolutely wild game yesterday. After a sorely needed, chaotic win, the Mariners are headed to Oakland for a two-game set, and splitting this series at the very least is crucial to keeping those slim playoff hopes alive. Seattle took three of four from them in late July, and they look to keep that vibe going tonight.

Mariners PR

Marco Gonzales is on the hill tonight, and he’ll hope to keep his remarkable turnaround going against a righty-heavy lineup, with likely MVP finalist Matt Olson the only left-handed swinger. Despite that, however, Oakland’s batting order feels pretty front-loaded, and an 8-9 of Chad Pinder and Elvis Andrus’s corpse looks to be anemic at the plate. Starting for thw A’s is one-time Mariner farmhand Paul Blackburn, whose lowish-walk, low-K, and solid ground ball rates have kept him sticking around as a depth starter for a few years now. Blackburn shut down the Mariners in 2017 with one of the weirder box scores you’ll see, but he faced them last year and got rocked, allowing seven runs without making it out of the second inning. Here’s to hoping that we see something closer to that!
