With spring training here, there is optimism abounding in 30 Major League cities. Now, legit or not, every fanbase needs reasons to be excited at the start of the baseball season. Some teams are easier to come up with reasons than others, but we are going to come up with at least one totally sincere reason for each team to be excited heading into the 2026 MLB season. This is … hope springs eternal … American League West edition.
Houston Astros: Play the Hits
If you go to see your favorite band play live, you want them to play the hits. That is how you have to think if you’re a Houston Astros fan in 2026. The classics are still there: Jeremy Pena, Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez, and Carlos Correa. Except for Altuve, they are all in their prime years. The AL West is no longer theirs to dominate, but it is still winnable with a nucleus that has brought the franchise lots of glory since 2017. If a couple of youngsters prove their mettle, that would only fortify the big names in the lineup. In the case of Alvarez, if he can stay healthy for 150+ games, he will be on the AL MVP short list. The glory years may be over, but the Astros can still play the hits, and that is a reason for optimism in Houston.
Athletics: Lock Them Up
The transient Athletics are building something special, no matter where they call home at the moment. This AL West team on the move has lots of young talent, and they are wisely locking them up to team-friendly extensions before their permanent relocation to Las Vegas. Brent Rooker, sit yourself down. Lawrence Butler, here’s your check. Tyler Soderstrom, you’re not going anywhere. Jacob Wilson, how about you stay a while? If the front office targets Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz next, that would be very prudent. This team has improved in wins in the last two seasons, and that seems likely again in 2026. Whether it’s in Oakland, Sacramento, or Las Vegas, locking up these young stars is a reason for optimism if you’re a fan of the Athletics.
Los Angeles Angels: A Halo Ace
The Los Angeles Angels haven’t had a winning season since 2015. I’m not saying that trend will change in 2026, but the Angels may have an ace up their sleeve in Grayson Rodriguez. Where in the name of Mark Langston and Bartolo Colon have all the Halo aces gone? A once highly touted pitching prospect with the Orioles, Rodriguez has battled injuries throughout his career. The Angels were able to acquire him via trade this offseason. After missing all of 2025, Grayson starts with a clean slate in the AL West and a bunch of talent in his arm. In 2024, he gave a glimpse of the ace that was promised (a 13-4 record and 130 K’s in 116.2 innings). Rodriguez will get every opportunity to be the ace for the Halos in 2026, and that is a reason for optimism for the Angels.
Seattle Mariners: Can You Woo, Woo, Woo?
The Seattle Mariners had a magical season in 2025, and Bryan Woo was a big part of it. In a rotation as deep as the cast of The Godfather, Woo may be the don. In 2025, Woo was an All-Star and fifth place finisher in the AL Cy Young vote. The last two seasons combined, this 26-year-old Californian has a 24-10 record, a 2.92 ERA, and a .9125 WHIP.
It is worth noting that Woo was injured for most of the postseason before making a couple of relief appearances late in the ALCS. Is that seven-game series different with a healthy Woo starting two games? Coming off an AL West title and a near World Series appearance, expectations are high in Seattle. Seattle fans are wondering … can Bryan Woo, Woo, Woo his way into the ace role of this mighty Mariners staff? This pitcher certainly represents a reason for optimism in Seattle this season.
Texas Rangers: Stallions in the Stable
In Texas, they love their horses, and the Texas Rangers have a full stable of stallions heading into the 2026 season. Jacob deGrom was healthy and returned to form in 2025. Now he is flanked by Nathan Eovaldi, also coming off an effective season. They traded for lefty strikeout specialist MacKenzie Gore. At the back end are former first-rounders Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker.
Yes, those last two are still finding their way in the Bigs, but from one to five, this rotation stacks up well against most lineups. Health will obviously play a large role in the success of this staff. The Rangers hope to do some damage in the AL West this season, and a strong starting rotation gives them a reason for optimism.
