Mariners Duo Win Historic Gold Gloves

November 4, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Cal Raleigh and Dylan Moore each took home their first career Gold Glove Awards, the first time in Seattle Mariners history a player has won at their respective positions. For the 13th time in franchise history, the Mariners have multiple American League Gold Glove winners.

Mariners Duo Win Historic Gold Gloves

Cal Raleigh – Catcher

Raleigh takes home the Gold Glove for the first time in his young career, following a snub in 2023 and a nomination in 2022. He is the first Mariners catcher to win the award. The 27-year-old led the majors in putouts among catchers. He was also tied for first among catchers in double plays turned and runners caught stealing.

The Mariners backstop also played more games at catcher than anyone else. His fielding percentage of .995 is the highest of his career when playing more than 50 games. Raleigh also had his career high in passed balls (min. 50 games), but he was able to even that out with a caught-stealing percentage of 28%. Raleigh was one of two catchers in the top five for DRS, with 17.

His knowledge of Seattle’s pitching staff and his ability to get calls contributed to his rSZ being the second-highest in the league.

Dylan Moore – Utility

Another first-time winner, Moore also takes home the first utility Gold Glove for Seattle. As a Mariner, Moore has exercised his defensive versatility from the get-go, playing every position in the infield and outfield. He spent most of 2024 at shortstop after being thrust into the infield following an injury to J.P. Crawford. In 358 1/3 innings, Moore racked up a .968 fielding percentage.

He tallied a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage at the other five positions he played. Moore’s versatility was on display, with time at third base (45 games), second base (37 games), first base (11 games), and 23 games in various outfield positions.  While his lackluster offense has led Moore to mainly be a late-inning defensive replacement, he has demonstrated he is just the right man for the job.
