Mariners Game #37 Preview: 5/9/25, TOR at SEA

The annual invasion of T-Mobile Park, this year a little earlier than usual

At least the Mariners are getting the annual invasion of T-Mobile Park over with early this year. This whole homestand – Blue Jays and Yankees – is going to be a yucky experience, as opposing fanbases take over significant portions of the park, so let’s just grit our teeth and get it all over with at once.

Lineups:

Here’s the relevant part of the Blue Jays’ needlessly bloated lineup graphic. Former Mariner Jonatan Clase, recently recalled to the team, gets the start in left, playing against the organization that signed and developed him before trading him in the ill-fated Yimi García trade last season for the first time.

News:

Today’s injury update from Justin Hollander brought some good news, as players start to work back from early-season injuries. Catch up with the full list here.

The Blue Jays have injury news of their own; contact maven and lineup stalwart Andrés Giménez has been placed on the 10-day IL with a quad strain. In his place, the Blue Jays have brought up Michael Stefanic, the former Angel. To make room for Stefanic, they DFA’d righty Dillon Tate, which is sad for the Mariners, who saw some real success against Tate.

Captain’s Log:

Dan Wilson on the annual Blue Jays takeover of T-Mobile Park:

“This is always a big series, but our guys have been in a lot of big series here already, and they’re going to continue to prepare the way they do and be ready for tonight’s game.”

Game Information:

Game time: 6:40 PT, as God intended. Get right out of here with your 7 PM starts, A’s.

TV: ROOT Sports NW (or the ROOT Sports app), with Angie Mentink and Aaron Goldsmith, and Jen Mueller doing sideline reporting.

Radio: 710 AM Seattle Sports, with Rick Rizzs, Ryan Rowland-Smith, and Gary Hill Jr. on the call. Shannon Drayer will handle pre- and post-game duties.

Tonight is College Night at the stadium, so between that and the Blue Jays fans, expect a raucous crowd. Tomorrow our favorite Canadian James Paxton will throw out the first pitch (here’s hoping Matt Brash catches it, otherwise, what are we even doing here). If you’re coming to the game for Mother’s Day, make sure to come early for the cool Mother’s Day clear bag. I love a useful giveaway item THE MOST.

If you’re coming to the game on Sunday with mom (or a mom-like
figure) make sure to come early to grab this clear purse giveaway (first 10K moms). It’s practical AND cute with really nice wide straps. I tried to talk @adamgresch.bsky.social into letting me keep this one but no dice.

Today in Mariners History:

  • 1977: The two newest teams in MLB, the Mariners and the Blue Jays, meet for the first time. The Blue Jays defeat the Mariners, 10-4.
  • 1986: In a later meeting between the two teams, Alvin Davis propelled the Mariners to a 13-3 win over Toronto, setting a Mariners single-game record with eight RBI (mostly accounted for by a grand slam and a three-run home run). It was Davis’s first multi-home run game.
  • 2002: Facing the Blue Jays at home, the Mariners overcome a three-run deficit in the ninth inning and eventually win, 8-7, on three consecutive two-out walks in the 11th inning. The Mariners set club records with 16 walks and 6 stolen bases in the game.
