The Oops-All-Lefties lineup takes on George Kirby
The Mariners shook off some of the rust in a rout of the Nationals last night as Logan Evans pitched the best game of his young career. With the Astros already notching a win today against the suddenly punchless Athletics, there’s no wiggle room for the Mariners to let their foot off the gas.
Lineups:
With a righty back on the mound for the Nationals, the Mariners lineup looks a little more like it usually does.

Longtime John Trupin favorite Trevor Williams takes the mound for Washington, who will again be trying their Oops-All-Lefties lineup, this time against George Kirby. I will be very interested to hear Kirby’s comments on that postgame.

News:
Despite pitching a gem last night, Logan Evans was optioned to Tacoma pregame to make room for an eventual Bryce Miller recall. Jackson Kowar has been activated off the 60-day IL, so there’s probably another move coming before Miller is activated, likely this weekend. Let’s all root for the Mariners to build up a big lead so Blas Castaño can make his MLB debut before becoming the likely casualty of that move.
Captain’s Log:
Dan Wilson on George Kirby making his T-Mobile season debut:
“He’s pitched a lot of ballgames here on this mound, so for him to get back out there in front of the home fans again, feel that home energy, take the field to start the game, all those different things that go on at home could definitely lead to more comfort out there.”
Game Information:
Game time: 6:40 PT
TV: ROOT Sports NW, with Aaron Goldsmith and Dave Valle, with Jen Mueller as field reporter
Radio: 710 AM Seattle Sports, with Rick Rizzs, Angie Mentink, and Gary Hill Jr., with Shannon Drayer returning for pre- and post-game.
As a reminder, it’s Randy Arozarena bobblehead night tonight and tomorrow (a night game despite being a series finale), with the first 10K fans getting a Randy-approved bobblehead. It’s also Looney Tunes Night, and Craft Beer Night, if you bought either of those ticket specials. Tomorrow’s Emo Night and Teacher Appreciation Nights are both sold out, but you can still snag a ticket for Zags Day (May 31st), Girl Scouts Day (June 2nd), Bark at the Park (June 3rd) or the Pride Month (June 4th and 13th) specials.
Today in Mariners History:
- 1989 – Chris Spiers of Milwaukee slides hard and high into Dave Valle trying to break up a double play attempt. Valle tears ligaments in his right knee and is out for six weeks. No word if this is where his tender-footedness came from, but taking over/unders on whether or not he mentions this on the broadcast tonight.
- 1998: Edgar hits the catwalk at Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay (RIP) in a 5-2 win. There’s some debate over who was the first to hit which catwalk, but I think we can all agree this ball was demolished:
- 2003: Jamie Moyer beats Kansas City 5-2, to finish May a perfect 5-0 with a 3.23 ERA. Moyer went 7.0 innings, allowing 2 earned runs to improve to 8-2 on the season.
- 2018: The Mariners earned their 16th comeback win of the season in a 2-1 victory over the Rangers after Kyle Seager plated the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the 6th inning.
