Mariners Reinstate Switch-Hitting Veteran from Injured List

June 24, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Seattle Mariners have activated Jorge Polanco from the 10-day injured list Monday. Tyler Locklear will head back to Triple-A Tacoma as a corresponding move. Polanco was out for under a month with a right hamstring strain. He went 6-for-20 in six games between High-A Everett and Triple-A Tacoma during his rehab assignment, hitting three home runs in the final two games. Polanco has hit an underwhelming .195/.293/.302 across 181 plate appearances for Seattle this season. He will resume his role as the club’s everyday second baseman.

Jorge Polanco Reinstated from 10-Day Injured List

Polanco missed seven games at the beginning of May due to tightness in the hamstring. He returned to the lineup on May 20 in New York but left Sunday’s game in Washington early after feeling the hamstring tighten up again.

“We don’t anticipate a lengthy absence,” general manager Justin Hollander said at the time of the injury. “We feel it’s fairly mild.”

Polanco had multiple stints on the injured list with the Minnesota Twins last season due to a left hamstring strain. The Mariners did consider placing the second baseman on the IL earlier in May but held off hoping he would return sooner than later.

“If we’re being honest, it’s probably my fault we didn’t put him on the IL to begin with,” Hollander said. “We had hoped to get him back within the 10-day period, and we did, just barely. Obviously having him in the lineup, especially when you’re going East in those ballparks is very valuable. And he wanted to be out there and we were making progress, so let it drift probably too long.”

The Mariners acquired the switch-hitting veteran from the Twins in exchange for four players and cash in January. Polanco is due $10.5 million this season, after the Twins exercised a club option, with a $12 million club option against a $750,000 buyout for 2025.
