Mariners Urged to Trade for Former National League MVP

June 14, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The St. Louis Cardinals could part ways with Paul Goldschmidt this summer. Goldschmidt is one of the key players mentioned as a trade candidate. He joins Ryan Helsley and Jojo Romero– as well as Kyle Gibson, Lance Lynn and possibly Sonny Gray. Much can change from now over the seven weeks until the deadline even though the Cardinals are facing the possibility of a significant roster overhaul. If they pursue this route, there’s potential for Goldschmidt to be traded to a team that needs infield help.

The Mariners could come calling for Goldschmidt and they have plenty of reason to do so.

Paul Goldschmidt, Mariners Trade Rumors

The Cardinals should contemplate trading Goldschmidt to bolster their pitching and secure a stronger future. Goldschmidt would fit nicely with the Mariners, who have the starting pitching and defence to run the table in October. However, they don’t have enough offense to make a deep postseason run. That makes it more important for them to add a bat like Goldschmidt’s at the trade deadline. Seattle would appear to be in a prime buying position. With a young talented pitching staff and star Julio Rodríguez signed to a long-term deal, the Mariners’ contention window isn’t likely to close anytime soon.

There’s a More Wide Open Path for the Mariners

With the Astros and Texas Rangers struggling and the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels among the league’s worst teams, the Mariners may take home the American League West title. But their chances of competing for a World Series title will depend on improving the offense that has been among the worst in baseball. The Mariners may not be willing to trade any of their top-five prospects, but no one should be considered to be untouchable.

According to Melissa Lockard of The Athletic, the Mariners have quite a few prospects in their system they could potentially part with.

“The Mariners may not be willing to trade any of their top-five prospects. Although no one in a Jerry Dipoto system should be considered untouchable. But there is depth even beyond the top guys. With [Colt] Emerson, [Cole] Young and [Felnin] Celestin all shortstops, the Mariners might be willing to part with Michael Arroyo, who came into the season ranked fourth in their system. Arroyo, 19, is currently in Low-A and has set a career-high in home runs while also reaching base at an above-average clip.

One other high-upside prospect Lockard mentioned includes right-handers Jeter Martinez and Walter Ford. In the upper levels, right-hander Emerson Hancock could intrigue a team like the Cardinals. Especially since he’s performing well in Triple-A. Right-hander Jimmy Joyce began the year on the injured list but is building up slowly in Double-A.
