Mariners Veteran Plans to Return Next Season

September 30, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Designated hitter Justin Turner who will be turning 40 this November has talked about wanting to continue to play next season. The Seattle Mariners acquired Turner from the Toronto Blue Jays on July 29th, 2024, in exchange for minor league outfielder RJ Schreck. Since joining the Mariners, Turner has batted .261 with five home runs, six doubles, 22 RBIs, 20 walks, and 34 strikeouts. Turner has been a great fit for the Mariners. Mainly as he is the oldest position player in MLB linked with a clubhouse that is filled with younger players. He functions as a great leader and role model for the team. When he played for the Blue Jays at the beginning of the 2024 season, he was identified as a rare player who has still produced well despite his age.

Mariners Veteran Looking Ahead to Playing in 2025

Turner’s Continued Drive

Turner is pretty firm on his decision to return to MLB next season. In addition, he will be a free agent next summer. “100 percent. I still feel good and feel like I have much to contribute. And I love spending time around these guys and the conversations, questions, and helping guys.” Turner also talked about how he believes he’s influenced his teammates and how he can help them make a deeper push next season. “Hopefully I’ve left a pretty good impact on them this year. And you know, who knows what happens. Maybe I’ll be around to keep trying to help guys grow and learn and get better and make a run next year.” Turner is highly respected and could be the missing piece of the puzzle the Mariners were looking for.

He showcases hustle, competence, and authenticity that sets him apart from other players on the team. His hustle comes with no surprise. He has won the Heart and Hustle award twice. With the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017 and with the Boston Red Sox in 2023. Turner also won the Roberto Clemente Award in 2022. His passion and drive to want to continue playing next season signifies his love for the game. Despite his age, he can still provide offense and speed. Also, he is a solid platoon DH, can come in as a pinch-hitter, and brings a strong presence overall.
