Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Mariners’ 7-3 loss to the New York Yankees

May 14, 2019 by Spokane Spokesman-Review Leave a Comment

The New York Yankes hit three home runs against Felix Hernandez in the first two innings and went on to defeat the visiting Mariners 7-3 Monday night.

Luke Voit hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Brett Gardner led off the second with a solo shot and, after Gio Urshela reached on a fielding error by M’s third baseman Ryon Healy, Thairo Estrada hit his first major-league home run to give the Yankees a 5-0 advantage.

The Mariners’ Domingo Santana hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, cutting New York’s lead to 7-2. Dee Gordon added a solo shot in the fifth.

Hernandez (1-3) went five innings ,allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Yankees starter CC Sabathia (2-1) allowed three runs on five hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out five.

Of note

OF Dom Thompson-Williams, acquired from the Yankees as part of the James Paxton deal, was named to MLBPipeline.com’s Prospect Team of the Week. Thompson-Williams had hits in all six games in which he played for Double-A Arkansas, batting .522 with two HRs and six RBIs.

By the numbers

11: Number of times Mariners batters struck out Monday, giving them a major-league worst 370 this season.

Our take from Right Field

All three of the Mariners’ runs came via homers and they struck out 11 times. Talk about feast or famine. It’d sure be nice if they just hit a single to the opposite field once in awhile.

Up next

The M’s continue their four-game series Tuesday in New York. LHP Marco Gonzales (5-1, 3.28 ERA) is set to face Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka (2-3, 3.92). First pitch is scheduled for 3:35 p.m.
