Apart from a couple of legends, it’s been tough sledding
Without as much fanfare or aplomb as was perhaps warranted, the Mariners unveiled on Wednesday a statue honoring Edgar Martínez. It was about time: T-Mobile Park sits on a street that bears his name. The Mariners already had statues of the other two most-beloved Mariners: Ken Griffey Jr. and Dave Niehaus.
In a twist of cruel irony, the Mariners and Rangers accomplished a rare feat on the same night of the statue unveiling: for just the fifth time in history, both teams batted their DH ninth. The Mariners’ DH, of course, was Jake Bauers. Ick.
In honor of Edgar (and in dishonor of Jake Bauers), I present you with this quiz. This quiz includes every Mariner who started the most games at designated hitter.
There is a small caveat: if a player started the most games at DH, but also started more games at another position, they are not included. For example, Mitch Haniger has actually led the team in DH starts this season. However, he’s not listed because he’s started more games at RF than at DH.
Enjoy!
